COMING THIS SUMMER, TAKE AN EDUCATIONAL TOUR OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS ABOARD THE SEARCHER!!! The MFSE is pleased to announce that we will be offering educational tours around the main Hawaiian islands during the summer of 2006. Join us as we show you an unique and intimate view of the Hawaiian Islands from aboard the Searcher. These multi-day trips shall highlight some of the more remote and beautiful spots of our island chain. Learn from the experts, as leading researchers, historians, and educators teach you about the islands and our marine ecosystems. Participate in on-going research projects and help to understand and preserve our natural environment. For more information, please contact: Capt. Jonathan Littenberg Educational Endeavors The MFSE is beginning an initiative that will allow Hawaii’s students immersion in the marine environment. We believe that through direct experience students can develop an appreciation and respect for the natural environment. It is hoped that this connection will promote their interest in understanding and preserving natural resources. Searcher provides an excellent vehicle for educating. We plan to work with Hawaii’s schools and teachers to design and implement a program that offers both coursework and experiential learning aboard the ship. In addition to the traditional courses that could be offered (math, marine sciences, Hawaiiana, literature, etc…) we plan to offer educational opportunities in ship operations. This could include subjects such as GPS/Navigation, Radar/Sonar, Propulsion, Power generation, etc… We believe that teaching the underlying principles in math and science through directly applicable yet exciting experiences is more likely to generate interest and a desire to learn in the students. It is hoped that eventually the MFSE will be able to link our educational and research efforts. That is we hope to have students experience working with professionals from the marine industry. We would like to expose the students to the marine research being conducted here in the islands, to the fishery and marine tourism industries, and to the professionals who work in protecting Hawaii’s marine environment. We believe in exposing students to the entire spectrum of careers related to the marine environment showing them not only the opportunities, but the importance of our natural environment to Hawaii’s well being.
PARTNERS WANTED: IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM UTILIZING THE SEARCHER AS A FLOATING CLASSROOM, PLEASE CONTACT: Capt. Jonathan Littenberg |
